Customs and Immigration Procedures in Ireland
+ My Favorites
The necessities of modern day life have made entry into other countries increasingly
more complex. However with the correct documentation, entry into Ireland is
relatively easy. Ireland and the U.K. have no residency restrictions for each others citizens and therefore have no formal immigration procedures
exist when travelling between the two countries. However for security reasons i.d. must be shown to the
airline or shipping line and proof of citizenship may be required. Travellers
arriving from outside the European Union (E.U.) need a valid passport. E.U.
citizens arriving from within the boundaries of the E.U. only need official
identification - but a passport is recommended. In some cases a visa is necessary,
depending on i) country of origin and ii) nature of visit. Always check with
your local Irish consular authority in your home country. Visa regulations for
those planning to work while in Ireland can be complicated, again check with
your local consul.
Visitors may be asked to prove that they have a return or onward ticket and
sufficient funds to take care of their needs while in Ireland. This particularly
applies to younger visitors and students. After immigration control it's time
to pass through customs control. Ireland operates the channel system to simplify
customs procedures. Before a visitor arrives in Ireland they should be aware
as to whether or not they have goods to declare to customs authorities. Firearms,
foodstuffs and any livestock are all subject to strict regulations. These regulations
are constantly changing so once again its best to contact your Irish consul
authority close to your planned departure.
There are two channels to choose from when passing through Irish customs.
The Red Channel
Those travellers who have goods to declare, or who are unsure as to whether
they need to declare an item or items to customs authorities should use the
Red Channel.
The Green Channel
Anyone arriving in Ireland who has nothing to declare should pass through this
channel.
REMEMBER: Whatever channel is used all travellers are subject to search.
